Victim Support NI urge NICTS to consider live links for all witnesses and victims during court closure

Victim Support NI, the leading organisation supporting victims of crime in Northern Ireland, has urged to the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunal Service to consider all options available to victims and witnesses while the Derry Courthouse closes for essential maintenance.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Victim Support NI respects the need to ensure safety and maintenance of the building, and recognise the desire to keep disruption to a minimum, hence why NICTS have chosen the summer months when the Crown court is closed.

“However, we are concerned about the impact the closure will have on victims and witnesses and would seek assurance that wherever possible the closure does not cause further delay to victims.

“We also urge the NICTS to consider making the live link and remote facilities to be made available to all victims and witnesses, if they choose to use it whilst the courthouse remains closed.

“This is particularly important for victims and witnesses who may have to use public transport, and face running into the accused or their family on their way to court.”

Victim Support NI run a Witness Service, which helps witnesses navigate the court process. These services will continue throughout the court closure in Derry.

Anyone who wishes to access their services can contact Nicola Cunning/Stephanie Lindsay at the Western Area Witness Service on (028) 7127 9440.
