Witness Service

Victim Support NI operates a Witness Service in every criminal court across Northern Ireland.

For many witnesses and victims, going to court can be a frightening and bewildering experience. Our team are trained to provide emotional support and practical information to adult prosecution witnesses, victims and their families.

Where children are witnesses, the NSPCC are the lead agency for service provision, and do this in partnership with Victim Support NI.

Our Witness Service is free, confidential and available to prosecution witnesses over the age of 18.

We can provide

Assistance & support

We can accompany victims and witnesses into the courtroom and offer them the opportunity to talk over the case when it has ended.

Tour of court

We can show victims and witnesses around the courtroom before giving evidence to familiarise them with what is often an alien environment.

Explanation of court processes

We can help translate legal jargon to keep you informed and updated on what is happening with your case at court.
We can help with your needs assessment, and help you prepare a victim personal statement.

Separate waiting area

We can provide a safe space to victims and witnesses as they wait to go to court.
Depending on the facilities available at your court, this can be a completely separate waiting area.
