Victim Support NI publishes new Victim Manifesto
Today, 22nd February is the European Day for Victims of Crime. This is an opportunity for us not only to remember the millions of victims who suffer at the hands of criminals each year, but also gives us the momentum to highlight the rights of victims of crime and suggest how we can make the criminal justice system better for future victims. This year, Victim Support NI are launching a new Victim Manifesto titled “Making Justice Victim Centred.”
This document lays out some simple changes we want to see over the next few years which would drastically improve the experience of victims of crime in Northern Ireland:
ASK 1: Broaden the scope of the Victim Charter and strengthen it to include the right to redress/remedy of victims of crime.
ASK 2: Provide financial redress for victims economically disadvantaged by crime.
ASK 3: Put robust pathways in place to meet the specific and unique mental health needs of victims of crime.
ASK 4: Greater investment in the prevention of technology enabled crime and tech support services for victims of cyber-crime.
These four asks are in line with the Redress, Restore, Recover aims of our current Strategy.
In the run up to the Assembly election, we will be asking all political parties in NI to commit to making these asks a reality.
