Statement Regarding the Outcome of the Donaldson Trial

First and foremost, our thoughts are with those who came forward to report their experiences and participate in what has been a lengthy and highly publicised legal process. We recognise the immense courage it takes for victims of sexual offences to disclose abuse, engage with the criminal justice system and give evidence in court.

This verdict sends an important message to all victims of sexual violence and abuse: it is never too late to come forward. We know that many victims take months, years, or even decades before they feel able to report what has happened to them. There are many reasons for this, including, fear, trauma and concerns about not being believed, or the significant impact that abuse can have on a person’s wellbeing. Delayed reporting does not diminish the seriousness of an offence, nor does it lessen the right of victims to seek justice and support.

Victim Support NI is acutely aware of the challenges faced by victims navigating the criminal justice system, particularly in cases that may involve lengthy investigations and court proceedings. Delays within the system can increase anxiety, prolong uncertainty and, in some circumstances, contribute to further trauma for complainants.

Through our Sexual Offence Legal Advisers (SOLA) service, Victim Support NI provides free, independent legal advice and support to adult victims of serious sexual offences. Our trained solicitors help victims understand their rights, make informed decisions, and navigate what can often be a complex legal process. Alongside our SOLA service, we offer emotional and practical support to victims of all crime, helping individuals and families cope with the impact of their experiences.

We would encourage anyone affected by this case, or by issues raised through the media coverage surrounding it, to seek support. No one should have to face the impact of crime alone. Victim Support NI’s services are available in confidence to any victim who needs information, emotional support or practical assistance.
