Statement Regarding Sentencing of Jeffrey Donaldson

First and foremost, our thoughts are with those who came forward and took part in a lengthy, highly publicised legal process. We recognise the immense courage it takes for victims of sexual offences, particularly historical sexual offences, to disclose abuse, engage with the criminal justice system, and give evidence in court. For many victims, speaking out is one of the most difficult decisions they will ever make.

Cases like this can affect people beyond those directly involved. Extensive media coverage and public discussion of sexual offences can be distressing for victims and survivors, sometimes triggering memories of past experiences and feelings of anxiety, fear, vulnerability, or re-traumatisation.

While public reporting of these cases plays an important role in raising awareness and promoting accountability, it is important to recognise that many victims may find the coverage difficult to watch, read, or hear. Everyone responds differently, and there is no right or wrong way to feel.

This case also sends an important message to victims of sexual violence and abuse: it is never too late to come forward. From our experience supporting victims across Northern Ireland, we know it can take months, years, or decades to tell someone what happened. Delayed reporting does not lessen the seriousness of an offence or a person’s right to support, justice, and healing.

Victim Support NI is Northern Ireland’s only dedicated all-crime charity, supporting victims and witnesses whether or not they have reported the crime to the police and regardless of how long ago the offence took place. Through our Sexual Offences Legal Adviser (SOLA) and Child Sexual Offences Legal Adviser (CSOLA) services, we provide free and independent legal advice and advocacy to adult and child victims of serious sexual offences. These services help victims understand their rights, navigate complex legal processes, and make informed decisions throughout their journey. Importantly, support is available to victims of both recent and historical sexual offences, and there is no time limit on accessing this service.

If this case has brought up difficult thoughts, memories, or emotions, support is available. You do not have to cope alone, and we encourage anyone affected to seek help when they are ready.
