Restorative practice can be a useful tool for victims who do not feel that the criminal justice system has answered their questions about the crime and why it happened.  It can help explain the motivation behind the crime, which can then help with the recovery process.

The type of crime you experience can be very important in terms of the trauma you experience as a result of the crime, and how long the crime can impact on your mental health.  In the case of serious crime like murder, all the feelings can raise their head many years later, when the offender is being released from prison.  Questions can circulate about the crime for years.

Studies show that approximately 85% of victims who engage with restorative justice have a positive experience.
In order for the practice to work, victims must feel safe, personally and emotionally.  Trust is very important, and the victim must feel like they are in control throughout the process.

The process must take place in a neutral space, and must be a safe space for both the victim and the offender.  Both parties must agree to what will happen and how it will happen.  The offender has the right to say no, or to stop the process if they don’t feel comfortable.  The victim must have the same rights.

Restorative practice does not always mean that you must meet with the offender face to face.  There are other options like shuttle mediation via a third party, online meetings via zoom, or even a simple exchange of letters.

We provide victim-led restorative practice for those who wish to engage in the process.  We can help to manage your expectations of what will happen, and can help with the administration and organisation of meetings, so that you can concentrate on what you wish to say and how you wish to say it.  The service is free and confidential and you will remain in control throughout the process.
