Theft

The offence of theft refers to the unlawful taking of another person’s property.

It can cover everything from shoplifting to stealing a car, to breaking into someone’s home, and has different categories depending on whether you’ve taken something from an individual, an employer or a shop.

It also covers the digital crime of identity theft, cybercrimes, and many other types of fraud.

Burglary occurs when someone breaks into another’s property with the intention of stealing something.

Robbery occurs when threat or force is used to commit theft, usually (but not always) in a public place.
