Crime happens

Crime happens, it’s a fact of life. When it happens to you, you may experience some kind of trauma, either through physical injury, emotional shock, or a mixture of both. Everyone reacts to crime in different ways, and even minor crimes can be very upsetting for the victim.

Reactions to trauma can last for hours, days, weeks, or even years.  It can be immediate, or occur months after the crime has taken place.  One important thing to remember is that IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.  You did nothing to bring this upon yourself.  You are the victim.

The police will take your crime seriously.   They will not judge regardless of the crime type, and should treat your case with sensitivity. They can also help to keep you safe and will take steps to protect you and your family if you are worried about intimidation or harassment.

Once a crime has been reported to the police, they will usually pass your details on to Victim Support NI unless you object.  Victim Support NI will then make contact with you to check you are ok and advise you of the full range of services.

If you do not want to report a crime to the police, you can still access the support of Victim Support NI or other services – just phone to make an appointment on either 028 9024 3133, or 028 7137 0086.
