Report A Crime?

If you are a victim of a crime, or if you see a crime taking place, it is up to you whether you tell the police.  You can still avail of Victim Support NI’s support services if you do not report the crime.
You can report a crime in a number of ways:

  • 999 if it is an emergency
  • If the incident is non-urgent you can phone 101 to report it
  • You can go directly to a police station, or to the Belfast International Airport Constabulary or Belfast Harbour Police if the crime happens within their jurisdictions.
  • You can also ask someone else you trust to report the crime on your behalf, or report anonymously via the Freephone Crimestoppers number 0800 555111

The police should take appropriate measures to make sure you are understood.  This can include translation or interpretation services, free of charge.
They will also give you details of the type of support you can access, the contact details of the officer involved in your case, a crime reference number, and other information of relevance to you.  They will also give you an Information leaflet for Victims of Crime, which you can read here.

The more information you can give the police when reporting a crime, the better.  You should tell the police as much as you can about the offence, and should also let them know if you fear for your own or your family’s safety, if there has been any personal injury or damage to property, and if you feel the offence was aggravated by sectarian or racial abuse or hatred.
